Bookish (and not so Bookish) Thoughts

This is a weekly event hosted by Bookishly Boisterous.

  • Knock on wood, we seem to be back to a healthy household. After a week of Sunnie battling a cold and cough, we have finally gotten most of it out of her system. Honey seemed to be the key! I was giving her cough medicine, and it never lasted very long. I started giving her spoonfuls of honey in the morning and at night, and it did the trick! We’ve now had 2 nights in a row of solid sleep, and I’m not a walking mom zombie anymore. I also swear by the Vicks Vaporizer and Vapor Bath. I hope that’s the last of the sickness we see for awhile.
  • We had snow on Saturday, because Mother Nature clearly hates Ohioans. But thankfully it’s all long gone and the temps have been slowly warming up all week – with a forecast of 70’s all weekend. Bring on the sunshine! I’m especially happy it’s going to be warm this Sunday, because I have a 5K race in the afternoon. Every race I’ve run so far this year has just about resulted in frostbite on my hands. I’m excited to only have to wear one layer of clothing and no gloves!
  • I finished Tell Me Three Things this week, and everyone needs to read this book. Even if YA isn’t your normal genre, because it’s not mine either. I have loved this authors previous adult books, so I decided to check out her YA debut. I’m rarely even in the mood for a YA book, but I started this one and couldn’t put it down! It’s absolutely fantastic – I highly recommend!
  • Then I started Too Late by Colleen Hoover last night. Intense! This is the darkest writing I’ve seen from CoHo, but it’s SO good. I didn’t want to put it down to go to bed last night. Damn sleep getting in the way of my reading. ICYMI, this is a free book she wrote for her fans on Wattpad, an app/website you can join for free. CoHo wrote a FREE book as a thank you to her fans. Just another reason I adore her.
  • I know my baby is growing up fast, and this week Sunnie surprised me by reading a book to me, and I won’t lie – it made me a little emotional. Not only am I excited that she’s learning to read, but it makes me so proud that she loves books as much as I do. It was a big moment in our house.

My mini bookworm

  • Besides the race on Sunday, this weekend I’m planning on spring cleaning my house – opening up the windows and letting in the fresh air! We’ll be spending as much time as possible outside enjoying the sunshine. Sunnie’s excited to ride her new bike, as she’s been practicing (and getting really good) in the basement since Easter. And maybe we’ll even have a fire in our new fire pit, if the weather cooperates like they keep promising. I’m really looking forward to it – here’s hoping the workweek continues to go quickly!
In case you missed it…

I also got these beauties…

tjr books

TJR is one of my favorite authors, I needed to add her books to my shelf. One with You completes my Crossfire collection (need to read it soon), and I couldn’t resist getting a couple romantic suspense books, since that’s my thing lately. Damn you, Target, with your pretty books I can’t resist.

Now that Sunnie is feeling better and we’re back to our normal routine, I’ve been able to get up the past two mornings and run before work. Feels good to start my day that way.

I signed up for my first 10K! It’s the first weekend in May. I’ve been training for it, and am finally feeling comfortable with the distance.

race

I love this movie. 😀

I also decided to download a Half Marathon app to start training. I don’t have any immediate plans to run one, and I know it’ll take me awhile to build up the endurance for it. My goal is to run in one by this time next year.

I have a 5K this Sunday, and it’s in the middle of the afternoon. That is bizarre timing to me – I’ve only ever run races in the early morning. I know there are some that do night/glow runs, but I haven’t run in any of those. I’m going to have to plan out my meals really carefully on Sunday so I don’t cramp up or feel crappy during the race.

So glad to hear that Sunnie is feeling better! And that is so awesome that she read a book to you!
Awesome looking book haul! I won an ARC of Listen to Me by Kristen Proby back in January but the publisher still hasn’t sent it to me 😦

    • Brandie says:

Thanks, I’m so glad we’re on the mend in our house, finally!
Well, that stinks that you still haven’t gotten it! I keep seeing great reviews about it. I’ve never read anything by this author before.

I am glad Sunnie is feeling better…I’ve heard that honey is also good with allergies, if the honey is locally grown.

I joined Wattpad a while ago, but haven’t spent any time there, or read complete books on the site. Too Late sounds good.

I loved Maybe in Another Life and After I Do.

Tell Me Three Things is on my radar, too. Thanks for sharing.

    • Brandie says:

Aw, thank you, Jillian! You’re so sweet! If I do one thing right by her, I hope it’s teaching her a love of reading. It makes me so happy, and I hope she continues to love reading as she gets older.

  3. Nadia says:

I’m so glad that Sunnie is feeling better. Fingers crossed that colds stay away from your house from now on! That’s so cool she is turning into a bookworm like you 🙂 I love it when books are so good you want to recommend them to every one – that is the best! I’m in the mood for spring cleaning, too – its time! Good luck with your 5k this weekend – you will rock it!! And that is awesome that you are doing a 10k – wow! Oh, and I know what you mean about Target – I love their book section 🙂 Hope you and your family have a terrific weekend!!

    • Brandie says:

Thanks, Nadia!! I can’t wait for this weekend and to air out my house, get things organized. I’m the kind of OCD nut who loves a good cleaning day. 😉
      Have a great weekend!

    • Brandie says:

I remember seeing that one online. I think it’s so cool of them. A nice treat for their fans. And that’s why we keep going back for more of their books!

  4. Kathryn says:

Happy to hear your Colleen Hoover book (free) was so good and you liked it. I love seeing young children learn to read and find the joy in it. So exciting.

  5. joyousreads says:

I’m glad all’s well and busy with you, Brandie. It’s been a hectic week for me as well, but I’m enjoying my new job and am looking forward to adjusting to all the newness.

    Happy reading!

  6. StephTheBookworm says:

Our weather is the exact same here. Finally expecting warm temps this weekend even though it was just snowing. Crazy!

I know you can do a 10K and a half marathon! I did both and had a blast! Good luck!

  7. The Bibliophile Babe says:

Glad Sunnie is feeling better, and so cute that she read to you!

I really need to read Tell Me Three Things. YA is so not my thing, but everyone is loving it.

Love the physical books! Great steps, too. 🙂

  8. Kathy says:

Your baby is growing up! I love that she read a book to you. 🙂 I’m happy we didn’t have snow here on Saturday, and they were predicting we would. This is the first time I can remember wearing sweaters and keeping my heat on at home this late into April. Bring on the sunshine, already!

    • Brandie says:

Wearing a winter coat in the morning, and then having the windows down in the car on the ride home – this weather is insane! I’d like to turn off my heat already!

  9. Michelle says:

I think the first book a child reads to a parent is so special. I loved having them read to me every night. It is one of my favorite memories – even better than me reading books to them!

We truly are in the heart of spring with the cold to warm back to cold again. Today, we actually have sun. I am fervently hoping that this lasts all weekend. I just want to soak up the sun’s warmth and enjoy the weather for the first time this year!

  10. Jenn says:

    1) Sunnie is sooooooo cute! Glad she’s feeling better 🙂
    2) I’ve seriously seen “Tell Me Three Things” at least 4 times this week. I need to get my hands on that book.

Loved this post! So personable 🙂

  11. Jasprit (@jaskaur11) says:

Good luck with your 5K Brandie! I was finally able to get up early one day this week and go for a run and it wasn’t as painful as it usually is, (usually I find myself way out of breath), but I did enjoy it, so I hope it becomes a regular thing! And I am in awe of the amounts of steps you do daily, I shall definitely be looking to you for the extra motivation! I hope you have a great week Brandie!

    • Brandie says:

Thanks, Jasprit! The 5k went well, despite the heat. Running gets easier, the more you do it, I promise!
I am kind of obsessed with my step count. I’ve been trying to surpass 15,000 a day every day, when I can.

  12. Rachel @The Readers Den says:

    Yay for the little bookworm!

Have a great 5K! The afternoon scheduling is a little different. I like your idea of the frozen banana and sugar free chocolate syrup (from your comment). I’ll have to give that a try sometime. 🙂

    • Brandie says:

Thanks, Rachel! The 5K went well, despite how hot it was. Mid afternoon run in 80 degrees is brutal. I will pay more attention to the time of the race next time I sign up for one. lol.

The frozen banana treat is so good!! 🙂

  13. twimom227 says:

Yea for healthy!! Sounds like things are going really well for you guys. Glad to hear. I can’t bring myself to spring cleaning yet. But we also have lacrosse games both Saturday and Sunday, so I am going to rest a little after my crazy couple of weeks. Glad you enjoyed Tell Me Three Things. I just can’t get excited to read it, but it sounds interesting.

    • Brandie says:

I’m not much for YA, but for some reason this one was really enjoyable for me.
I’m glad I got the spring cleaning over with. When the mood strikes it’s best I get it done. Now that it’s nicer out, it’s the last thing I feel like doing. 🙂

  14. k2reader says:

Glad to hear you are all healthy! I swear this winter has been the worst for sickness…everyone I know has been sick on and off all winter, including me. I hope you had a good race today…and yay for the warmer weather! We are finally getting the same warm weather here in NY! I’d much rather walk outdoors than having to head to the gym to use the treadmill.

I just got the audio of The Obsession…it will be my walking audio this week and I can’t wait to start it! How was I Let You Go? I have that one coming up in my pile soon. Have a great week!!!

    • Brandie says:

Thank you! It has really been a brutal winter. I’m glad it’s over! I’m loving the Obsession. Started it last night and it’s so good! I Let You Go was just okay for me. I’m in the minority, though. I have blogger friends who loved it.

  15. A.M.B. says:

Good luck with your 10K! I would love to start running again, but my knee has been a problem for a number of years now (I’m a race director of an early spring 5K, though). My main form of exercise is a stationary bike. I get lots of reading done when I’m on it. 🙂

    • Brandie says:

That’s the only downside to running – I can listen to audio books (although I get distracted easily), but I can’t read actual books. I tried a spinning class a few months ago and could barely walk for a few days! It kicked my butt!
