Bookish (and not so Bookish) Thoughts

This is a weekly event hosted by Bookishly Boisterous.

  • The flu bug is gone, to be replaced with a cold & cough. My poor peanut started coughing on Saturday, and it just got worse by Sunday. And then by Monday, I had it too. The cough is still lingering, but I think (hope) the worst of it is gone.
  • Thankfully I didn’t catch the crud before Sunday, because I ran my first 5K, and it was so awesome! I couldn’t have asked for more perfect running weather. The course wasn’t too hilly, and I finished in 28:28, which is way faster than I ever imagined for my first race. My girlfriend from work ran it with me, and I couldn’t have hoped for a better experience. My hubby was there to cheer me on, and the only bummer was that we had to leave Sunnie at home with my mom. We decided not to take her out in the cold, with her cough, which was a good call since it was much colder than I had thought it would be.

I’m ready to sign up for another one!

I will admit that crossing that finish line was a very emotional experience. I have been training and working so hard for this, and to finally accomplish something I would have never imagined possible – it’s an amazing feeling.

  • Making progress with my Creeptastic October reads! I finished Daughters unto Devils over the weekend, which I had just picked up on a whim Saturday. Very creepy and perfect for this time of year. Now I’m loving The Dead House.

  • Backtracking to the weekend, we had a date night on Friday. We did a little shopping and had dinner at our favorite local Italian place. And when we got home, we watched The Shining, which was on AMC (I LOVE AMC this time of year with all the scary movies!). Which leads me to wondering what are YOUR favorite scary movies? Mine will always be Halloween, hands down. But I also love the Scream movies. I can’t remember the last time I watched a movie that really spooked the hell outta me (although The Shining did creep me out a bit), so if you have any recommendations for a movie that’s sure to make me jump, please share!
  • Last night I got to watch Sunnie’s dance class (normally parents aren’t allowed in the room), and I was so impressed with how much the girls have learned in a month. It’s very structured, but fun at the same time, and their teacher is fantastic. Sunnie loves it, and I really think dance could be something she continues doing for years. I know I’m biased, but I think she’s really good!
  • Looking forward to the weekend if only to sleep in a bit and shake this stupid cold. I hope everyone has a good one!
In case you missed it…

Even despite feeling like crapola most of the week, I’ve been making myself get up every morning to run, in hopes of sweating out the crud. Except for today – today is my rest day. I do feel better after running, but I haven’t had it in me to do a long run this week, just my 3 miles every day. Hoping to get in a long run this weekend if I’m feeling better.

Congratulations on the 5K – I think it’s totally understandable feeling emotional crossing the finish line, you’ve put a lot in to it!

Hope your household feels better soon and the sickness stays away for the rest of the cold season!

I am so proud of you and so happy for you! Your time for the race is outstanding! It feels so amazing to cross the finish line at a race. I really need to get back to doing them and training for a race. 🙂

I love the Scream and Halloween movies as well. They’re probably my favorites. I like the Rob Zombie Halloween one too and some of his other horror movies. I saw It Follows when it came out a few months ago and I loved it! Sinister and The Conjuring scared me a lot too. I’ve also always liked The Hills Have Eyes.

    • Brandie says:

Thank you, Steph! That means a lot to me!!

I’m going to have to check into It Follows. And I’ve always wanted to see The Conjuring! Thanks for the recommendations!

Congratulations on your 5K. I’ve always wanted to acomplish something like that, but I honestly don’t know where to start. I love The Shining. I refuse to watch Halloween. That movies scares the crap out of me lol. An older horror favourite is the Amityville Horror films. I did also like the remake. Oh, and The Ring! A newish horror that I liked was The Fourth Kind. It was absolutely terrifying, though. I hope you have a great weekend and that cold kicks itself to the curb ;).

    • Brandie says:

Thank you! I would have never imagined training for one this time last year. It was a random decision, but I’m glad I did it!

Thanks for the recommendations! I have seen The Ring, although it’s been awhile.

Thank you – you have a great weekend as well! And thanks for stopping by!

  4. Nadia says:

Congratulations, Brandie!! That is so awesome about your 5k 🙂 You did great time and what a amazing accomplishment. I’ve always wanted to do something like that and think maybe its time I start working toward making it happen.

    Hope everyone is feeling better!

My aunt called to tell me The Shining was on – such a good movie! I love Halloween, too!

Hope you have a great weekend!!

  5. Rachel says:

Congratulations!!! Well done you, under 30 minutes! So proud!!

As for scary movies, I don’t do scary. Psychological thrillers are more my thing, think Single White Female, The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, Unbreakable, etc. R xx

  6. Kathy says:

Congratulations on the 5K finish!! That is awesome. I hope everyone feels better soon. Halloween is my scariest flick along with Salem’s Lot (the older versions of each). I slept with a chef’s knife under my pillow after seeing Halloween and was so engrossed in Salem’s Lot that I jumped 3ft. if any movement caught my eye.

P.S. I finished Black-eyed Susans and LOVED it!! Thanks for the recommendation!

  7. The Bibliophile Babe says:

Congrats on the 5k! I want to do one, though I need to train more first. I hope you all feel better soon! I loved dancing as a kid…then I got too tall for ballet, with too big of boobs. :p

I’m not a horror movie fan! Books, sure, but movies freak me out. The Rite has to be the scariest I’ve seen. I’m a wuss when it comes to them.

  8. Kristin (@_Kristin315_) says:

Oh my goodness. You had me going there for a second. I thought we were at the same 5k! LoL I, too, ran my first 5k on Sunday through a hilly vineyard. Congrats! I was holding back the tears when I crossed the finish line. It was such an exhilarating experience.

  9. Teddyree says:

Big congrats on your 1st 5k …you ROCK Brandie, you really do, totally inspiring! Hope you’re feeling better and Sunnie is well again. Happy reading 🙂

  10. Running 'N' Reading says:

Brandie!! I’m so excited to hear about your race; I can’t believe it was that cold (hard to imagine here, just yet), but it sounds like you had a phenomenal day!! WOO HOO! Crossing that finish line is definitely a game changer, right? You’re addicted already, I can tell… 😉

    • Brandie says:

It’s SO addicting!! Already planning to run another one in a few weeks! And starting to plan my training for a half next year! I love it!!

Thank you. 🙂 You are so inspiring, and I appreciate your support and encouragement!!
